The colonists desired a sense of freedom and power that was not obtained by the sovereign rule of England, so they instituted an improved governmental system that resolved most of their concerns, but was not without faults. The way England was controlling and monarchially put doubts and frustration in the minds of the commonfolk in America who felt used and dissatisfied (Doc 1). As a result, the Declaration of Independence was written that renounced the jurisdiction of Great Britain and gave themselves the independence. This also had the negative impact of the descent into fighting and the allegiance issue (Doc 2). Shown in document 3, there was a separation of the population in the colonies because some remained loyal to the crown.
Within Benjamin Banneker’s letter, he implements pathos in order to illustrate the unjust and hypocritical actions of Thomas Jefferson, in order to exhibit that Jefferson, of all people, should be understanding and ashamed of the fear and injustice which he is imposing. Banneker inflicts these emotions through allusions and flashbacks. The United States was once under the British control, leaving the United States feeling helpless, fearful, and impotent. During this time period, Thomas Jefferson, took part in writing the Declaration of Independence, a document which states the equality of men and the justification of freedom. Banneker alludes to the Declaration in the seventh paragraph to exhibit the hypocrisy which Jefferson demonstrates.

Thomas Jefferson established himself to be a motivated and powerful speaker by asserting his credibility at the beginning of the document. Jefferson cites, ¨...the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them…¨ Through a statement of fact, Jefferson is able to justify his reasoning of why we have the right to declare independence while accordingly undermining the power of the British monarchy. Repeatedly throughout the document, Jefferson addresses the reader using pronouns such as ¨We¨ or ¨Us¨ to bring a sense of unity, portraying our nation as a whole while constantly addressing the king as ¨He¨ to belittle the king, indicating he has no power.
