Decoding: The Cast of Amontillado Historical evidence serves as proof for the outcome which can take place when humans often taken it upon themselves to serve what they believe to be justice in whichever way they chose to, regardless of it being right or wrong. The revenge factor has throughout history, played a major role in affecting the lives of many in such drastic ways as illustrated in the short story by author Edgar Allan Poe titled The Cast of Amontillado. This short story serves as proof of how heartless and determined vengeance can drive an individual to become, but moreover not feel remorseful after the fact. The theme of evil is also one important theme to analyze which is significantly pronounced throughout the story. The presence of evil manifests further as the story goes on, with Montresor demonstrating more and more evil acts as he lures Fortunato deeper into the catacombs. The author amplifies the suspense by describing the coldness, darkness, and bones that surrounded the characters. With this intention he plays out his act of revenge of eventually burying Fortunato alive, which consequently drives Fortunato to express fear, desperation, and disbelieve of his current situation. By the same token Montresor takes some time piling rocks to bury Fortunato thus he takes time to enjoy the cries coming from him while he urges Fortunato to leave the catacombs, knowing that he had chained him to the wall and was also buried, making it impossible for him to leave. Through his actions Montresor once again takes advantage of his psychological superiority as he had done earlier towards his house servants when he told them to not leave the palazzo because he was not going to be represent, he did this knowingly that it would result in the complete
