The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill of 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico, had more than 200 million gallons of oil erupt from the rig for 87 days, 2 days after the original explosion it sunk into the ocean. It affected 16,000 miles of coast along Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. With British Petroleum responsible for up to $40 billion dollars in repairs and with more than 30,000 people helping clean the oil spill still caused many problems. It harmed communities around it that relied on fishing to survive, and prevented people from traveling which was another form of income for those living around it, which left many unemployed temporarily. Birds would get covered in oil and ingest it trying to clean their feathers and it would cause them to have the inability to maintain homeostasis, which would then kill them in the wild. The oil creates dead zones along the coast. Dead zones have been increasing around the world since the 1970’s, but the one is the Gulf of Mexico is the second largest one worldwide and has been impacted due to the oil spill, more specifically it is closest to MIssissippi. Dead zones are created by a lack of oxygen present and then algae begin to bloom and deplete the water more of the oxygen needed to sustain life. This leads to reproductive problems for fish, they lack reproduction and it results in a low egg count near the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico, as noted by the Scientific America magazine. An increase in cetacean deaths occurred over the years and more occurrences of brucellosis infection occurred, meaning more cetaceans were beaching themselves. Lung and adrenal disorders occurred more as cetaceans ingest the oil in the waters. By the end of 2015, 1,400 whales and dolphins had stranded themselves.
