The price tag of maintaining the U.S.-led world order and protecting the national interests has crept up to the trillions. But it is hard to understand the array of issues that the defense budget is tackling due to the evolving set of threats that are being faced. For this reason, it is crucial for the Department of Defense to react to any cuts of its budget and effectively fund projects that correspond with the national strategy as well as support the economic value that contractors have placed into the system. By the end of World War II, the United States established itself as a hegemon on the international stage through its strong military presence, alliances, and partnerships. This has faced significant backlash from a variety of state and non-state actors that hope to challenge the U.S.-led world order. The important questions are: How can the Department of Defense improve its way of assessing current security threats? Is the military adequately equipped and technologically superior to those of other countries? War and national security threats are changing as well as how to effectively plan and manage them with minimal cost and loss of life. The cost of war has substantially increased which will require the United States to upgrade its arsenal and better train, supply, and recruit soldiers. The war in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria was five times more expensive than WWI and 18 more times expensive than the 1991 Gulf War. These rising costs further illustrate how war is changing and the need for the Department of Defense to adjust to those transformations.
