If we cannot see love with our eyes, so how can we define love? The word love can have many different meanings. For centuries, human being has been trying to define it. There are two typical opposite types of marriage: romantic marriage and pragmatic marriage. “Romantic marriage” is used to imply the following general scenario: two people have met and have a growing friendship, complete with physical attraction and compatibility of character and interests. “Pragmatic marriage” is a marriage that is made possible by formal procedures of family or group politics. A responsible authority sets up or encourages the marriage. The authority could be parents, family, a religious figure or a consensus. People who are individualistic often have a tendency to support the “romantic marriage”, they believe that getting married without love appears to be a disastrous decision. Vice versa, collectivists value companionate love more than passionate love in romantic relationships, they prefer to get married and then take their time to fall in love. This example is about marriage decisions in different cultures, reflecting the differences in love expectation. A movie or series can reflex the culture of the country where it was made. “Eight-year-old-bride” is a famous series in India. The series was about the life of a girl, who had been married since she was eight. In that marriage, the young bride got into so many troubles. However, her husband supported, helped her overcome the difficulties. They built the chemistry gradually and found love finally. For some people, they would found it hard to understand the series if they do not know Indian culture. India has strong-ties-families, collectivism and large power distance cultures. It is normal for parents to set up a marriage for their young children. Love will come after the marriage. This is different from American culture. Love comes first then it might turn into marriage.
