Beauty: One Definition Does Not Fit All Society’s definition of beauty is skewed by airbrushing techniques and digital technologies. This definition is not legitimate and it should not be the accepted version of what women think of themselves. People allow society to construct the thoughts on beauty and it reflects how beauty is perceived. Webster Dictionary’s definition of beauty is the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction in the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations, meaningful designs, or something else. Beauty is a perception a brain assumes and can be found in all without using one definition. To begin with, scientists are studying to figure out what makes people and objects beautiful. Researchers are asking three main questions which include: what do people find beautiful, to what extent people see beauty in themselves, and what role beauty plays in society. There are reasons to believe that specific features and biologically based factors guide society’s assessment of beauty. Regardless of culture, there appears to be certain patterns of brain activity associated with viewing something you find beauty in (Landau). Women often find they are compared to false idols who do not exist. The comparisons women have with their beauty and other women’s beauty can have a positive or negative emotional or physical consequence. “We compare how we think we look to other people and their looks and we end up making a decision about whether we are much better or much worse” (Patrick).
