Most people believe that their childhood is over when they find out people like the tooth fairy or Santa Claus do not exist. Other people believe that when they determine certain aspects of their past as childlike behavior, they are no longer a child for they no longer partake in such behavior. The law suggests everyone is still a child until they turn eighteen. Some people believe that they never had a childhood at all. I do not believe childhood is measured in a specific time frame. In truth, I do not believe there is even an end date to childhood. Childhood is defined as being the time in which a person is a child. People like Charles Lamb, Percy Shelly, and John Keats all went through some sort of adversity in their lives and because of this their writings benefited. I was once told that any hardship or adversity is only helping you in the end. In a sense, adversity inspired creativity. This may be true, but it is also true that adversity and hardship, can harden feelings. Those feelings can promote negative views on life. Negative views on current living conditions can inspire some to suggest that the past was a better time in their lives as those people may feel life only gets worse. It was all I have ever known. What is usually believed to make childhood great is not what I define it to be. Some people believe it is the relaxed atmosphere or imagination that comes with childhood that makes childhood what it is. If it is the latter, imagination and wonder never truly go away. We submerge those thoughts with a more adult friendly word: creativity. However, if people do believe childhood to represent material things instead of a feeling then how can someone compare toys or playgrounds to finding true love or having your first child?
