In his article, William J. Bennett declares that “for some reason, perhaps for no reason, many folks think it is not proper to have heroes.” (Let’s Bring Back Heroes) I disagree, and I believe that everyone, whether they acknowledge it or not, has looked up to someone as a hero before. Some people only think of a hero as a superhuman person who flies and wears a cape, but realistically we encounter heroes every single day. The greatest example of a hero to me can be found in someone that we interact with everyday- a mother. Everyone has their own definition of a hero. A mother fits every description of a hero there can be. Mothers are selfless, devoted, and expect no recognition while deserving so much. Heroes put others safety before themselves and a mother is a perfect example of that. A mother might not wear a costume and a mask but without her things would not run smoothly. Almost anyone would agree that a hero is someone who inspires you to be very best, someone you look up to, and someone that you know you can depend on. A hero is irreplaceable and that’s exactly what a mother is. Some people wait their entire life to meet their hero, or never get to meet them at all. Others communicate with theirs daily.
The most heroic quality of mothers is their selflessness. A mother puts her child before anything and everyone else in her life, even herself. Being a mother is a constant sacrifice and no one will ever praise them or recognize them for their continuous love and care for their children. Mothers wear old clothes so their children can wear new clothes. Mothers spend their time right after work to take their children to extracurricular activities. Other than their full time paying job, mothers usually serve as the primary caretaker of the household. Mothers cook, clean, do laundry, help with homework, and provide emotional support.
