Family is a term that many people claim to know, but only a few of us truly understand the meaning of. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines family as, “a group of people who are related to each other.” Nothing more, nothing less. When I first saw this effortless definition, it sparked a question in my mind. How could something as complicated as family be explained in only ten short words? I had never thought of my family as only the people I was related to, so I set out to put together a new, more suitable manner of defining family. Miraculously, I managed to do so in only seven words. Family are the people one cares about.

My family is no exception, which is the reason that they're the most important aspect of my life. I was blessed with two of the greatest parents in world, and haven't always appreciated them as much as I should have. Whether it’s a childhood feud or a new found disagreement, the Christmas dinner table can get pretty heated. Thankfully, we’re able to put aside our differences to come together as a family every so often. Most holiday get-togethers with the Troutmans are filled with stories about “the good old days”. However, I was never very sure these days were “good”, as they were usually filled with my my dad and his four brothers releasing various animals into their school’s library and nearly killing each other with Roman Candles. Fortunately, my grandfather was the local judge, so they only needed to worry about the fury of my grandmother. Some of my most cherished memories come from an annual Thanksgiving farm party. My mother’s side of the family meets at my grandfather’s farm early in the morning.
