Happiness. It can be seen in something as small as a bug or in something as vast as the universe. There is no one source of happiness, but depends on each person and what they value, whether it maybe education, wealth, health, a family. Aristotle defines it as “the best, noblest, and most pleasant thing,” (pg 338). Happiness is not only defined as the best thing, but as the end towards which all things aim to. Aristotle looked at happiness as the last thing and how to and when to achieve it. Happiness is something that can be reached from a child’s first breath to any moment in life where one feels elated. Aristotle’s definition of happiness may not be what many people define as happiness. His definition is a very philosophical way to look at pure happiness. His definition does not include the happiness of a Mother seeing her child or of a Father witnessing his son succeed, but a more complete meaning. He derives his definition from excelling, being good, and being moderate. He distinguishes his definition by claiming other definitions have slight flaws. For example, if happiness comes from knowledge, many people acquire knowledge to provide a living not for happiness. Another way he distinguishes happiness is in form of virtue. My definition of happiness would be anything that provides one pleasure that is attained in a moral manner. I would define one graduating as happiness where as Aristotle sees this as a step towards happiness. Happiness is not achieved at death or after death, but in the little or big things in life. For example, many people get happy by buying cars, whereas others see this as a necessity and might go through hardships to obtain a car.
