Everyone has heard about, seen it in action, shared it with someone, or even experienced it for themselves, but what is it really? What, you ask? Happiness of course! Happiness is an extremely tricky subject because it cannot be pinpointed to one definite thing. Happiness seems to be fluid, in constant motion. To some, happiness may just a be word that we humans use to describe emotion, primarily when we are feeling bubbly and chipper inside. That may be true, but I believe a better question than, “What is Happiness?”, is, “What isn’t happiness?”. Happiness is a choice, that we get to make every day. For some, today is their wedding day, their first birthday, the first day of their retirement, or their first day in a new home. Today may be the day their child was delivered into the world, they received a promotion after years of hard work, or they had they day off and got to spend their free time with loved ones. What wonderful things that this life can offer us. Clearly, happiness is hidden around every corner waiting to be presented to those who seek upon it, and some who stumble upon it. The pursuit of which is our right embodied inside of The Declaration of Independence. Written by Thomas Jefferson, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” (Barnet, Bedau, 2014). Happiness to me seems to be a reward. One that is only temporary because too much of a good thing, isn’t always a good thing! Everlasting happiness would only result in infinite contention; therefore, eliminating the need for the word happiness altogether.
