The Heat When most people think of the word heat, the first thought that comes to mind normally is a degree of warmth or hotness. With this definition being proven true by Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, it is normal to think just that when people use this old/middle English origin word. For instance, when walking up to a door there lays a sign reading, “Keep door closed in order to keep heat outside.” The first instinct for any human after reading that sign would be that the owner of the place wishes to keep the inside cool from the hotness outdoors. One may see this use of the word in more of the gangster style movies and books but is also used in common everyday slang. For example, a group of youngsters decide they want to get into some serious acts of crime; they indeed need to pack some serious heat for the drive-by. Heat used in this case is referring to a weapon because of the use of the word drive-by at the end; everybody knows what a drive by is! These games, events, and tournaments get really competitive from people trying to prove they are the best in their area, region, and/ or state. When thinking about baseball, the person with all the attention on the field is who? The pitcher of course! As the pitcher gets in his stance, winds up, and releases the fastest fastball that anyone could have ever expected, a recruiting coach from a top college in the area mumbles, “That kid is bringing the heat out there”. In this example heat refers to the speed of an object, specifically in this case, a baseball.
