Identity

Identity uniquely defines a person and is the main driving force of a diverse social dynamic. In many ways the identities of a society’s individuals speaks about its variety. The definition of identity itself is so ambiguous because it is used for a multitude of meanings. In a paper of James D. Fearon to attempt to analytically define the word identity incorporating all its uses today, he states that “identity” is presently used in two linked senses, which may be termed “social” and “personal” (Fearon, 2). In a study by Fatima Sevgili and Cesur Sevim to determine the mediating role of materialism in the relationship between values and consumption materialism was treated as a determinant towards the presence of consumption. Then materialism-defined by an individual’s tendency to place success, self-worth, and happiness on physical objects-had to associate to pre-determined values after tests in order to relate it to consumption behavior (Sevgili and Sevim, 2086). The conclusion was that values linked to self-enhancement such as hedonism, stimulation, and power, but opposite to self-transcendence values such as benevolence, were more likely to be present together with materialism (Sevgili and Sevim, 2086). If applied to the premise of Feed’s businesses and industry it is for the sake of collective self-enhancement and power that the priority of consumption is far greater than that of environmental integrity. Contemporary society is likewise in the same situation the gravity of each situation differs. The difference in severity lies in the immediacy of consumption’s adverse effects.
