Forgiveness is an important quality that promotes peace of mind and allows people to put behind old grudges. People who carry grudges against others negatively impact their well-being as they become caught in a vicious cycle of resentment and bitterness. Thus, harbouring resentments keeps people emotionally unstable and prevents them from achieving inner peace. This idea is examined in William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, and Dick Lourie’s poem “How do we forgive our fathers”.

The story works through the grandmother’s comments on the nature of man, in which she originally acts as if modern generations are evil and lack goodness, but she eventually is shown to believe that everyone has some goodness in them. To begin, she is largely pessimistic about human nature and acts in a superior way when she talks to Red Sam about the tendencies of people. Her comment that “‘People are certainly not nice like they used to be’”
We are humans and a majority of us have dealt with heartache, pain, broken promises, along with the joyous things like dreams, aspirations, and successful futures. Humans mess up and make mistakes, but we have to remember that forgiveness is a very prestigious and powerful thing. Forgiveness affects people’s lives in positive ways through the hardships, difficulties, and struggles of life. There comes a time when forgiveness should not be available to some individuals. However, this depends on the past situations that have occurred in your life as well as other individuals.
The film “Do the Right Thing” Directed by Spike Lee takes us through what life is like and what people do in a small town of Brooklyn, New York. According to Sanjek (2000), diversity in the United States has caused major decrease in the white population and has caused increase of the minority population. The neighborhood in which the film revolves around is filled with many different races and ethnical groups such as Koreans, Jews, Whites, Latinos, and Italians but is mainly inhabited by African Americans. In each short story the symbolic dragon (temptation) is exhibited in at least one character in each short story. The temptation that each character falls victim to is pride. The grandmother’s pride got in the way when she was badgering the family about doing what she wants to do, Mr. Shiftlet’s pride was ironic when he judges the earth for being slime when he himself is slime, and Mrs. McIntyre’s pride gets in between the marriage of Sulk and Mr. Guizac’s white cousin.

Flannery O’Connor uses her deep and substantial words to unleash a deeper meaning within her writing “A Good Man Is Hard To Find.” Although there were many cultural conflicts amongst the story, racism is a very strongly expressed concern in the text due to the generational differences between the Grandmother and the family. My grandmother, Mimi, is the sweetest woman to walk the Earth. However, due to her generational differences, it caused her to feel as if an adopted black baby might be troubling to her family. Despite their personality differences, my grandmother and the grandmother in “ A Good Man Is Hard To Find” view racial differences in a much diverse way than the younger generations of their families.
