Sin “Who can say, ‘I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin’?” (Proverbs 20:9 NIV). No one living on this earth is without sin and although the term is often associated with the spiritual wrongs, it has a very simple definition that can be used for non-believers as well as Christians. Everyone has a moral code and when that is broken, it is considered “wrong”. A sin is the exact same concept, whether or not you link it with a transgression against God. Just as there are multiple moral views, there are multiple concepts and definitions of the word “sin”. Sin refers to immorality, selfish wants and desires, and disobedience.

When a child disobeys their parents, it is deemed a sin. Likewise, Marlow sins when he lies to the company on Kurtz’s behalf. “I wouldn’t have gone so far as to fight for Kurtz, but I went for him near enough to a lie,” (Conrad, 1990, p. 42). Marlow is the one character is who conscious of his sin. He hated lying, and was so appalled by the fact that he lied twice during his time in the Congo. However, his consciousness of his sin does not in any way justify it; although, the unawareness of sin also is not justification for it. Therefore, Marlow was still iniquitous when he failed to tell the truth and disobeyed the company. The law that countries and their citizens are required to follow are put in place to keep people from doing things ethically and morally wrong. However, crime and disobedience of the law still occurs. “In many countries, one can be sentenced to death for relatively common crimes, such as drug trafficking, prostitution, incest, adultery, robbery, theft, and kidnapping,” (Capital Punishment, 2016, para. 4). These crimes are happen too often and the punishments are beginning to get worse. There are laws in different countries for these crimes aligned with punishments that are deemed appropriate in order to prevent the disobedience. Regardless of the fact that disobedience can be the necessary action in certain situations, in others, it can be considered sinful and harmful to those around the wrongdoer.
