Which of the following leaves the worst mark: getting beat up, tormented online, or being called derogatory names? Many people have their different opinions, but they should all mutually agree on one thing. Bullying, in every shape and form, is something that victims can never fully heal from. Many targets are often too afraid to speak up for themselves, and even more bystanders do not stand up for what is right. Sometimes, it is too easy to fall into the unspeakable role of the persecutor. Students must be aware of the different types of bullying and what they can do to prevent themselves or their peers from pushing a student to the point of no return. According to a study, students say that name calling is the most common type of harassment that happens inside of schools (Facts About Bullying). Sadly, this is because of how easy it is for someone to slip up and say something mean. Most culprits are not even aware of their guilt because it is such a common trap to fall into. Interestingly enough, this can happen between friends at lunch, when they are simply, and playfully, teasing each other. For instance, a case involving a young man named Jacob, resulted in changes to his school after he was taunted with various names and harassed over a period in time (Schwartz). The aggressors probably did not think about how much they alienated him, and instead peer pressured themselves into abusing him. That is why it is important to remember that words are not simply letters stringed together, but powerful tools that can be turned into weapons.
