What is music? My favorite definition comes from the ever-prestigious dictionary.com: "An art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color." I think it's a shame that this definition cannot be found in more prominent dictionaries because I feel that this encompasses every aspect of music that I appreciate so much. Ever since I was a little girl I had a connection to all sorts of music; from Disney Princess soundtracks to attempting to play the electric keyboard. My school's chorus combines with the choir of a nearby school and sings a multi-movement work accompanied by a professional orchestra. This mass of extremely diverse people is dubbed the "Super Chorus." Usually, the two schools do not get along very well, seeing as we are sports rivals, but on this day, everyone is brought together purely for their love of music. No matter how different we are from each other, we all must face the same grueling rehearsal. The Super Chorus practices throughout the school day and into the night to perfect the piece. The entire process is mentally and physically exhausting; standing for over 7 hours straight and straining to keep singing. Many times throughout the day I ask myself, as I'm sure plenty do: is this really worth it? Even durin the performance the answer to this question is unclear for me. An uncomfortable 100 person chorus is standing on makeshift risers--two rows on every riser, the lights are hot, everyone is tired, the song had been sung seemingly 100 times. It is after the performance that I get the answer. Finally, being released from the auditorium and breathing in the cool night air, I get the chance to reflect on the entire experience and decide that yes, it is worth it. The journey may have been arduous, but knowing that so many people had to struggle through the day as I did and that we all managed to work together to form one collaborative group, despite
