Have you ever been in a relationship? Have you ever thought of getting married? Do you believe in true love? If your answer is yes, I can bet any amount that you have your head in the clouds and you have already imagined your fairy tale wedding hundreds of times. However, if your answer is no, you are that type of person whose hair stand on end even hearing the word “marriage” and who has already decided at an early age to never settle down. But what does marriage actually mean? Several distinct definitions can be found, but according to Merriam-Webster website, it nowadays means the state of being united as spouses in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law. Is it really the case? Does marriage mean only arguments, irritating problems and stress? Do you think it means the restriction of freedom? Do you believe you would have a happier life alone? Is marriage only a formal way to get the approval from the civil authorities? When these questions come to our mind they should also go away in that exact moment. But after a certain period of time, would not you feel lonely and depressed? Would not you give up on your free weekends and solitary nights to enjoy the time with someone special to you? Obviously, marriage might be hard sometimes and it might make our lives more difficult but with respect, support, love communicating with each other and being faithful makes everything wonderful. Zelmyra and Herbert Fisher, the longest married couple say that “Everyone who plants a seed and harvests the crop celebrates together.” (GodVine, n.d.) Good and healthy marriage shouldn’t mean the loss of freedom. People in a relationship should be able to develop their own personality while finding a way not to separate from each other. Certainly, marriage is not a rose of bed, it includes hardship and of course we must sacrifice sometimes but only for the better.
