What is beauty? According to the dictionary beauty is “a combination of qualities present in a thing or person that pleases the aesthetic senses or brings about deep satisfaction,” and that proves to be true, as many people take the definition and apply it solely to a person’s outer appearance instead of applying it to the way they behave and think. In all reality, the term is subjective to each and every person, but so much of that term is placed upon a person’s physical appearance, if your “beautiful” then your “attractive” or “desirable” and you must meet society’s “standards,” otherwise you are mocked and ridiculed. Although it would be nice to think that inner beauty triumphs over what is on the outside the fact is men and women both are designed to care about packaging- it’s “beauty over brains.” Truth is it’s not a woman’s character or morals that is going to land her on the cover of Maxim, and it’s not a man’s kindness or knowledge that’s going to catch a women’s eye- but a women’s push-up bra or “movie star chin” will certainly land her on the cover and it’s a man’s chiseled physique or “million dollar inheritance” that’s going to guarantee a woman’s attention. At one point a woman, Pam Pallet, says that facial attractiveness drives reproduction and draws people to other people, followed by examples such as the color of a woman’s lips in contrast to the surrounding skin. Then several other people go into grave detail about how “sexual dimorphic cues” make us more attractive to the opposite sex- things like bigger eyes, fuller lips, longer eyelashes, and contrasts of the face- things all reliant on the exterior of the body.
