Sorrow, melancholy, distress, despair, hurt, wistful, these all mean the same, a feeling of a simple word, yet the meaning is not simple at all. It is one of the heaviest emotions and one that we all carry the most. This emotion can never properly be explained through words, but by that one rip on your heart, the tear stains on your cheeks, the nights you spend feeling like you are insignificant to this world, and those memories of someone who left you too soon. This is how you define that little word, sadness. Even though it can break you as a person if handled the wrong way, sadness is needed for personal development because, it’s the mechanism of our physical and emotional body to slow us down in order to notice our imperfections so we can make them better and ultimately grow as an individual. “In [sadness], reflection deepens, thoughts embrace a larger sense of time, and the events of a long lifetime get distilled into a sense of one’s essential nature… Melancholy thoughts carve out an interior space where wisdom can take up residence.” (Thomas Moore, 1992) When we become introversive, which sadness allows us to do, we become aware of what we need to learn and how to go about learning it. …show more content…
We put in all this effort so we don’t have to feel that uncomfortable sensation of sadness. We can temporarily be successful at diverting our attention and avoiding the feeling, but if our sadness is not properly met, it will destroy the things we normally enjoy of a wholehearted, contented pleasure. Discomfort is not necessarily such a bad thing: we well know that enduring discomfort can be necessary in the attaining of goals. What allows us to endure the discomfort is knowing the benefit that this endurance leads
