The story Curiosity by Gary Blackwood follows the story of Rufus Goodspeed, a boy with a back deformity and a knack for chess, who struggled through life’s twists and turns. I think that the theme of this story is that you should always accept your fate with good grace because even though Rufus had a back deformity and his father eventually dies and he has no mother, he still keeps a happy attitude and loves his life. At the beginning of the story, Rufus and his father are a living in a parsonage (a place where people that work at a church live), they are living a nice happy life with a maid and everything they need until Rufus’ father decides to write a scientific book that goes against the religion of the church that he works for. All of a sudden, during one of Rufus’ shows, he saw through a hole in the cabinet and the fabric from inside the turk, the lady in black again. This time though, she was his challenger. So Rufus’ deducted that he must be being followed. Then, Maelzel moved his exhibit to a different state and who was there but the lady in black. Rufus was getting really worried now and he didn’t know what to do. Rufus went on with his life though, and he began to hang out with a girl named Virginia. Virginia was trying to get the secret of the turk from rufus, but rufus thought Virginia actually liked him so he was heartbroken when he found out. When the secret got out about how the turk worked, Rufus lost his job along with Jacques. Rufus grew older and later found out that the woman in the black that had been following was his mom. Rufus had been lied to as a kid and his father told him that his mom was dead but he only did it because Rufus’ mom was suffering from depression and she was suicidal. So after Rufus and his mom talked about everything she had missed, they both traveled the world and Rufus entered chess tournaments for money. In the end, I think that the theme is to accept your fate with good grace because even though Rufus had a terrible life, he still made everything work and he looked at the brighter side of
