Deke Slayton was an amazing astronaut as well as a former pilot in the American Air Force, an aeronautical engineer and the first Chief of the Astronaut Office for NASA. His most famous mission was when he was chosen to join the Mercury Seven astronaut crew. One of his other acheivements included being the oldest person to travel in space at the time at the age of 51.
