“Without writers, stories would not be written, Without actors, stories could not be brought to life.” This quote, by Angie-Marie Delsante, describes plays in words I could never imagine to have thought of. For my theatrical review I decided to take a different route than most students would think of doing. I went to watch Frankenstein to better fit the season were in currently. The play was based on the novel by Mary Shelley, however, it was adapted by Bruce Goodrich. The play was directed by Maria Cominis and held at the James D. Young Theatre located at California State University, Fullerton. I went to see this production on October 14, 2017 at 8:00pm. It was about a guy named Victor Frankenstein, who seemed to have a real interest to discover how someone lived and had a notebook full of thoughts and theories. A tragedy of his mother’s passing caused him to spiral into a dark place, which drew out that desire to the point he had started to act upon that desire. He started to collect old body parts to construct a creature, which then he could revive his mother. He does succeed at bringing the creature to life, unfortunately, he is horrified by the sight he saw and then killed it then and there or so he thought. He wanders into the street with remorse and runs into his pal Henry where they both are back at his place. Once Victor notices that the creature is gone, he becomes mortified at the fact the beast was gone and that he unleashed it on the world. They had the audience feel the actual sadness and pain that happened with Frankenstein and Victor. It was perfectly related because they used peoples feelings and logic for certain aspects of the play so that even if it’s unbelievable, its still believable. For example, when William had died, it made everyone gasp in the theatre because of the tragic death of the poor boy that no one had saw coming if you went in blind like me. The saddest part was Justine was trying to save him from danger and, in the end, ended up dying because of the boy’s death. It’s displays how any person would feel or even do once someone they saw as a child die after they try to risk their life to save them. Another example is when the monster was left to die by Victor after being created. In this world, we see this happen with many children and the parents that say they don’t want them. Whether Victor approved or not, Frankenstein was his child and he should not have tried to kill it or left it. It also helps people understand what it’s like to be a child who has been abandoned by the parent and how they long to feel a family’s love without judgement. I feel as if the designers and production was staged perfectly in order to relate the plot because it felt like the production was very fluid with each scene and it didn’t seem like it jumped from one part to the next. The chronological order of everything felt appropriate
