Trend Lines: A big month for Delta It's been a big month For Delta Air Lines. On 28 April, the Atlanta-based carrier announced a large order for 75 Bombardier C Series aircraft with options to acquire 50 more. The C Series is a completely new and more fuel efficient next generation aircraft designed to hold between 100 and 140 passengers. Delta's initial order is for the smaller 110-seat CS100 model.
Montreal-based aircraft manufacturer Bombardier is currently a leader in the regional jet market with over a thousand of its 50-90 seat CRJ Series aircraft in airline service throughout the world. With the higher capacity C Series, Bombardier is entering a new segment of the market and competing head-to-head with mainline narrowbody jets from giants Boeing and Airbus. Because the new C Series can be seen as a departure from Bombardier's traditional regional jet market, the new aircraft program had been struggling to obtain orders. LATAM, the South American mega-carrier that resulted from the merger of Chile's LAN Airlines and Brazil's TAM Airlines, unveiled new post-merger unified branding and a new livery that will replace the individual LAN and TAM colors. The new LATAM logo features a stylized representation of the South American continent. Several aircraft have already been painted in the new joint LATAM livery. The airline expects to have 50 aircraft painted by the end of 2016, and the entire fleet completed by 2018. The newly branded birds may soon be spotted here in the Washington, DC, area, as LATAM recently began service from Lima, Peru, to Washington-Dulles on 2 May.
