Robert Johnson was born in Hazelhurst, Mississippi and travelled around wherever people enjoyed his music. Some famous songs he wrote were “Sweet Home Chicago,” “I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom,” and “Love in Vain.” Most of the songs he performed were the type of blues called the Delta Blues. The Delta Blues are a style of music that comes from Mississippi. It usually consists of a single voice accompanied by a guitar. Most of the singers were African Americans and their songs expressed the racial discrimination that they faced. Robert Johnson is famous for having supposedly sold his soul to the devil for his musical talent. He was born on May 18, 1911. He took the name of his birth father. During his life he was not very famous, and only recorded 29 songs when he was in Dallas and San Antonio. He died at the young age of 27 on August 16, 1938. It was suspected that he was purposely poisoned. Sadly, John Hammond was looking for him to perform at Carnegie HalI and when he found that Johnson was dead, he booked someone else instead. Later, in the 1960’s, his music really started to grow into the legacy we know today. The music of Robert Johnson has a big impact on the music we listen to in modern times.
