At Western Michigan University, there are many micro-cultures. One particular micro-culture I want to belong to is a sorority by the name of Delta Sigma Theta, incorporated. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, 103 years ago, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest African-American Greek-lettered organization. To become a part of this sorority you need to meet the membership requirements. Women may join as undergraduate chapters at a college or university, or through an alumnae chapter after receiving a college degree. The tenth National President, Dorothy I. Height, wrote: “To preserve tradition, we must bring it into the current decade and make sure it remains viable for decades to come.” Protocol is something mandatory for all sorority’s and fraternity’s. In Delta Sigma Theta protocol is prescribed as respect and recognition for founders, the Nation President and Past National Presidents, the Regional Director/Representative, Chapter Charter Members, and Honorary Members. It is a fact that every Sorority and Fraternity has some type of tradition. In Delta Sigma Theta there are three rites of passage. A soror is entitled to attend the three Rites of passage of any chapter, granted that she is properly attired. Sorors under disciplinary action are not entitled to attend induction and Initiation. The secrets, passwords, signs and grips are never written but are transmitted by word of mouth from one Delta to another. All sorority insignia should be worn properly, respectfully, and in good taste. Membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a lifetime commitment. Therefore, every soror is due recognition and courtesy in each chapter, regardless of chapter membership. It’s ultimately a sisterhood that should never be discouraged. Delta sigma theta is founded on scholarship, sisterhood, and community service. The number one rule to surviving becoming a Delta Sigma Theta is to be discrete as possible. Showing discretion is keeping your business to yourself and not having anyone know your every move. No one should even know that you are thinking about pledging. When joining a sorority, it is made very clear that whichever sorority you are trying to pledge that there will be no hazing allowed. It depends on the school and chapter you are associated in whether they will make you participate in hazing. Hazing is humiliating and sometimes dangerous initiation rituals, which are usually performed on college students seeking to be in a fraternity or sorority. If you really are passionate about being a part of a DST, you will get through it!
