Even a popular singer and songwriter had been a victim of bullying. Demi Lovato is one very strong girl who has been through a lot of difficulties in her life. Bullying had caused her a lot of problems such as self-harming, depression, eating disorder and she had tried to block out the pain with drinking alcohol and doing drugs. According to an interview on “The Ellen Show”, she talks about some of the issues that bullying caused her and says: “I struggled with cutting, anorexia, basically bulimia...”(Lovato). Bullies have called her fat and other names. At school she had had a lot of friends and one day she had none. That was only because of bullying. In all face-to face and cyberbullying examples and stories, the victim suffers from many “negative physical, school, and mental health issues.” ("Effects of Bullying"). They also can experience depression, anxiety, feeling sad and lonely, “changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy. These issues may persist into adulthood.” ("Effects of Bullying"). In addition, bullied kids academic test scores and school participation can be decreased. “They are more likely to miss, skip, or drop out of school.” ("Effects of Bullying"). According to WNCN, a newspaper article, “Déjah Jones, a 14-year-old freshman at Woodside High School, took her own life Saturday morning. Her family says it’s because she was bullied at school. Déjah’s parents describe her as happy, full of life, hope, ambition and dreams. Family and friends are shocked by the unexpected tragedy…...Her family says the cloud of bullying at the school, was at the very least, a part of what led her to take her own life.” (WNCN [Page #]). This article shows perfectly one of the effects of bullying. This couldn’t be prevented and her family suffers but there are still so many bullied kids around the world who may want to end their lives. Say what is happening and they would take responsibility and do something to stop it. Other ways to help the bullied person is by being kind, showing care, talking, sitting with them, just showing them that they are not alone, and that they have someone who they can rely on. There are also many organisations about bullying and preventing bullying like “STOMP Out Bullying”. Its mission is “reducing and preventing bullying, cyberbullying, sexting and other digital abuse, educating against homophobia, racism and hatred, decreasing school absenteeism, and deterring violence in schools, online and in communities across the country. It teaches effective solutions on how to respond to all forms of bullying; as well as educating kids and teens in school and online, providing help for those in need and at risk of suicide, raising awareness, peer mentoring programs in schools, public service announcements by noted celebrities, and social media campaigns. An additional focus educates parents on how to keep their children safe and responsible online.”
