Angelina Grimke’s Speech at Philadelphia Hall Angelina Grimke was one of two daughters of a wealthy, aristocratic slaveholding judge. Her family was from Charleston, South Carolina. Angelina was a very peculiar woman because her political views seemed unusual compared to most Southerners of the time. She was a strong believer and supporter of the abolitionist movement. Angelina’s most famous speech was delivered at the National Anti-Slavery Convention on May 16, 1838.
By expressing the pain which she felt when battling with bipolar disorder, depression, and eating disorders, Lovato is creating an environment in which the audience can possibly relate to.

Melinda doesn’t speak because of what happened at the party and she doesn’t think anyone will believe her. Or if they do believe her then Andy would do something to her or tell people that she was lying. In the documentary “The New Asylums”,Ohio's state prison system reveals the issues that are ongoing with mentally ill inmates. The major problem we have today is that no one is taking care of the people of these people. Most mentally ill people live by themselves with no family or friends to take care of them and they are off their medications. The mentally ill come in to prison on non violent offenses such as disturbing the peace, trespassing, etc. After leaving mental hospitals they usually end up on the streets and become homeless.
There is a rough estimate of around 60 percent of incarcerated individuals that are diagnosed with mental illnesses. This is due to what could be called the criminalization of the mentally ill. Mass incarceration has been America’s response to poverty and mental illness. An estimated 40 percent of the mentally ill Americans end up in the criminal justice system. Around 2 million people with mental illness go to jail every year, that’s ten times more people in jail than in state funding psychiatric treatment.
Singing sensation Demi Lovato wants Congress to make mental health a top priority and she heads to Capitol Hill Tuesday. She meets the members of Congress to raise awareness of mental illness. She recently spoke out at the National Council for Behavioral Health’s annual Hill Day in Washington, D.C. She shared about her own mental health struggles.

Yes, back in the 1800’s they did have asylums for people with mental disorders. But that was when doctors didn’t fully understand mental illnesses and disorders. But currently, doctors are able to comprehend illnesses and disorders.
We need to upgrade the services that are provided to help. Many of the current treatments and techniques are the same as when they were founded. The new knowledge and resources can better help those who are mentally ill. There are still more people with mental illness in prisons and jails than there are in hospitals and this needs to change. It is unfair because they do not understand.
