Greece is very well known for the birthplace of Democracy and its Olympics, but has also brought many new changes into our Civilization. In the early 19th century Greece and the U.S fought for freedom and Democracy. These two Countries joined allies to fight side by side in two World Wars. Also joining the NATO forces. Geek citizens state that the politics in Greece does not benefit the country. Their concern that it benefits more of their own personal bank accounts. The president is chosen by the Parliament of the Hellenes for a term of five years. The current president is Prokopis Pavlopoulos. Ancient Olympics games, are dedicated to the Olympian gods and took place on the ancient plains of Olympia. This was also a way Greeks made money to support their families and towns, to better their wealth of living. The Ancient Olympic were different from the modern games. There were fewer events and only the men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any other country. Also, the games are held in only one spot Olympia instead of moving to different places. Modern Olympic Games, The first modern Olympic game took place on April 6, 1896. It was a long lost tradition that witch then reborn in Athens 1,500 years ago after being banned by King Georgios I. He allowed 13 nations in the international competition. The first modern Olympics consisted of, 241 male athletes (and no women) representing 14 nations competed in 43 events. This event was a total of 10 days. The second Olympiad got held in Paris in 1900 with 997 athletes (22 of them women) from 24 countries competing in 95 events, by this time they continue to add more events, also including winter games. . The 27-year-old James Connolly outjumped the field, producing a leap of 13.71m to finish more than one meter ahead of his nearest opponent and become the first American Olympic champion since AD385. Some of the most famous art pieces are: Fallen Warrior from Temple of Aphaia, The Pergamon Altar, and God from The Sea Poseidon. Men ran the government, and spent almost all of their time away from home. If they were not part of politics, the men spent time in the fields, overseeing or working the crops, sailing, hunting, in manufacturing or in trade. Man uses their free time in drinking parties, the men enjoyed wrestling, horseback riding, and the Olympic Games. Greek women did not have much freedom outside the home. They did not attend weddings, funerals, some religious festivals. They could only visit female neighbors for brief periods of time. In their home, Greek women were in charge of their house chores and to attain to their children. Some families with wealth had maids to do the cleaning, cooking and sometime work the field, but mainly had a guard outside their home to protect them from any other man coming in, while the husband was away either at work or at war. As years went by there customs begun to change, now they allow women to do anything they please to such as: join the service, work the field and or still be housewives.
