According to the Oxford English dictionary, democracy is “a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.” Without opinions from outside the central government, there would be no such thing as democracy. Common opinions from everyday people, celebrities, and online blogs, among others, are almost all worthwhile opinions and encourage democratic values. Without these opinions, we would not have the democratic society that we live in.
One of the reasons that the United States is such a strong democratic country is the fact that everyone is allowed and encouraged to have their own opinions on a multitude of subjects. For politicians, the public opinion of them is of utmost importance, since they could be out of a job if the general public does not like the job they are doing. In a way, it is similar for celebrities. If the public does not have a good opinion of them, they could potentially be out of a large amount of money or a job. This can go the other way, too. A celebrity or politician’s opinion can influence the opinions of a large amount of people. Justin Bieber is an example of a celebrity who had their career influenced by public opinion. From 2008 until 2013, Bieber was a popular singer, however he has had some instances in which he did not behave as well as he was expected to, including several legal issues. Recently he has struggled to gain fans who were not already in his fanbase. In 2014, there was a petition to the government to have Bieber deported that had well over a quarter million signatures.
