The idea of preventing a global catastrophe by the means of causing a smaller one is not infrequently used by writers of thrillers, science fiction and others. In the case of the plot denouement of Watchmen, I almost instinctively compare it with the ending of Inferno by Dan Brown: To save the mankind, a character – Ozymandias in the comic and Bertrand Zobrist in the novel – decides to sacrifice a part of this mankind.
