My interest in dentistry first started when I had orthodontic treatments in recent years. I find it fascinating how such a small part of your body can have such a significant effect on both your health and appearance. In school, science has always been my favourite subject; especially experiments as I can put theory into practical use. Dentistry is a career where I will be able to use my passion of science to improve others' quality of life, which is very meaningful and rewarding. To gain further insight in to the profession, I completed work shadowing in a dental practice. Throughout the placement, different dental treatments were being carried out, from the regular check-ups to fillings, root canal treatments and impressions taken for production of dentures. From my world challenge to India, I worked with people from different cultures. This experience enabled me to demonstrate and develop many skills, including leadership, teamwork and self-motivation. In school, I am involved in our paired reading scheme where I help children with learning difficulties to improve their reading. I am delighted to help individuals and witness their improvements. Similarly, I am privileged to be a peer mentor this year as I helped first years to settle in to secondary school by sharing my experiences and giving them advice. Another one of my responsibilities this year is volunteering at a local nursery to work with young children. As dentists often have to deal with anxious young children, being empathetic and caring is crucial to make them feel relaxed. As well as working with children, I often interact with the general public as I have volunteered in a charity shop for the last 2 years.
