Abstract With the attacks after 9/11, the Department of Homeland Security was created by the passage of the Homeland Security Act by Congress in November 2002. DHS has five core missions; prevent terrorism and enhancing security, secure and manage our borders, enforce and administer our immigration laws, safeguard and secure cyberspace, and ensure resilience to disasters. While DHS and the departments within do their share it is important to recognize state, local, tribal and territorial (SLTT) agencies as well. This paper will explain how the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), more specifically the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) get aid from various agencies in the United States. SLTT agencies are our first line of defense and are a crucial role in protecting the U.S. More than often they are the first responders on the scene when there is an attack. It is most certain that SLTT agencies will encounter foreign-born criminals or immigrants that may threat public or national security. Within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) the LESC is the largest investigated agency. LESC is a national database that gives immediate information on alien’s identity, immigration status, and any prior criminal history. In turn this allows for real-time assistance to SLTT law enforcement agencies. Though sharing this information with our law enforcement agencies the LESC helps protect the United States. LESC operates 24/7, 365 days a year with the goal to get STLL law enforcement officers the information needed to help on their daily enforcement.
