As a young boy, Derek Jeter’s dream was to become starting shortstop for the New York Yankees. Believe it or not his dream came true, but he didn't just become the starting shortstop. He was an amazing player on and off the field. His great attitude and motivation to never give up got him where he is today. As only a high school player Jeter has won many national sports award like the 1992 American High School Coaches Association's, “High School Player of the Year”, 1992 “Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year”, and “High School Player of the Year” again by USA today. A few years later only In 1994, The Sporting News and Baseball America Selected Derek Jeter as “Minor League Player of the Year” because of his impressive .344 batting average and 50 stolen bases. Two seasons later in 1996, he started playing for the New York Yankees and earned American League Rookie of the Year for his outstanding performance. Also, in the season of 1998, Jeter earned his first All-Star selection of 14. This season ended with the Yankees winning the world championship, the first of three in a row. In the season of 1999, Jeter’s hits led the majors, along with his career high in home runs and RBIs. Also In 2000, Jeter was the first player ever to be named the World Series and All-star game MVP in the same season. He also got named team captain in 2003 because of his excellence on and off the field. The next year in 2004 he won his first of 5 Gold Glove awards because of his greatness in fielding. One of his major charities is the Turn 2 Foundation. They got the name Turn 2 from one of Jeter's favorites plays that is a double play made by infielders in the game. The Turn 2 Foundation was created in 1996 to help young people be academically successful and healthy, to become leaders, and say no to drugs and alcohol. He started the plans one night with his dad in a hotel room sharing a pizza. Derek Jeter foundation has given more than 23 million dollars in grants to help create and support programs that help the young people say no and turn away from alcohol and drugs and instead “Turn 2” Healthy lifestyles. In Tampa where he resides, New York where he works and West Michigan where his childhood lies, the Turn 2 Foundation has given more than 19 million dollars to the programs just there. Jeter continues this project to give back to the communities that he has a close connection with. He inspires young people through the programs he has. Another program is Jeter's Leaders that gives appreciation to the children with academic excellence. Just a few days after Jeter retired he announced the plans to a website called “Players Tribune.” This site would help Pro Athletes talk directly to their fans telling the truth through first-person articles, podcasts, and videos. Derek Jeter now owns part of the Marlins too. Now that he is retired he spends more time with his family and his charity. This is why Derek Jeter is such a
