Even philosophers cannot always explain everything and just like everyone else they come up with an all-purpose explanatory device. So when we hear the term “The God of philosophers” we might wonder what this means. Philosophers introduced this term when they needed to explain things but in fact they could not explain their point or got stuck. So this saying helps to explain anything when they cannot. The truth about the existence of God has been an argument for years and yet we still have no real proof but these past few weeks we have learned about various “proofs” for the existence of God according to a few philosophers. One philosopher by the name of Descartes introduced us to an interesting idea about why he believes God must exist. Descartes begins by saying that he has an idea of God, a perfect being. Throughout the story Ivan struggles to understand the reason and existence of the unjust suffering in the world. The belief that God does exist creates a problem for him. Ivan explains that if God does exist then what explains the amount of suffering in the world, which he illustrates by outlining merciless stories of the torture and even killing of innocent children throughout Europe. Ivan is dumbfounded that in a world where such evil is flourished that a God could even exist. However, Ivan thinks that such cruel actions are sometimes ignored and unworthy of consideration, so if we support the existence of God because people are willing to forgive one another this creates a false sense of harmony.
