When we think about skin it is important for us to understand what it is we’re addressing. The skin is a really amazing organ, as you probably know; it is one of the biggest organs in the body. The skin is made of five layers itself and every 28 days it basically reproduces itself so in a given it’s 12 to 13 new skins that you have which is quite remarkable when you think about that. The thing is skin has some very important functions which we can sort of categorize in 3 ways. The first is protective; there is a barrier to protect unwanted things from coming into the system, viruses, bacteria and kinds of things that causes damage within. It’s also an insulator which keeps good things in, so it’s very important from that side, from that aspect. It’s very important in terms of regulation because it regulates body temperature. It’s also a reservoir for the synthesis of Vitamin D and it’s also key in detoxification so it’s doing a lot for us already. When we consider these things, we are also reminded that it’s the key part of our sensation, things that you feel, pain, pressure, temperature; all those nerve endings lie in the skin. It’s an incredibly complex organ that too often we take for granted. The problem is the skin can be damaged.
