The Fourth of July
The Fourth of July is a patriotic holiday celebrated each summer commemorating the young United States declaring its freedom from Britain. The most anticipated part of the whole holiday is the barbeque where families, neighbors, and friends gather. There is laughter and music as the fellowship begins and stories are told. People are scattered about relaxing on their brightly colored camping chairs talking, others are inside preparing the food, and finally there are a few manning the grill grilling the main course, juicy hamburgers and hot dogs grilled to perfection. Stomachs begin to grumble upon smelling the smoke from the grill dances under everyone’s nose, teasing them. When the food is ready, the host tries to make themself heard over the sound of chit-chat that fills the yard.

Each child is handed a few and suddenly the darkness is lit up with dancing sparks. Despite the children running about with the sparklers in hand, it grows darker and darker; a fire is built in the sandy pit for light. The illuminating fire is a backdrop to the people feasting on the s'mores which from their sides ooze lightly charcoaled, mashed marshmallows topped with a few pieces of rich chocolate. The graham cracker begins to crumble and the gooey insides seeps out making a mess and causing a hearty round of laughter. Finally, the fireworks begin. Colors of red, white, and blue explode with a zap followed by a whining crackle. The colors that once were plastered in the now fall and disappear into the darkness. Everyone looks up, pointing at their favorite design in awe. It is quiet, except for the cracking of the fire and the popping of the fireworks, as a wave of peace pases over the crowded as they feel united in celebrating such a patriotic holiday with the people that mean the most to
