Beloveds Have you ever found the one? Searching– in and out, up and down, online, and around town –until you have no doubt; this is the one. The feeling gets burned into your memory. Others will come and go, like the green of the aspen trees, but not this one. This is a forever feeling. It will be impossible for you to forget the day that you found the perfect pair of pants. For some, it was a pair of oversized blue jeans, allowing the wearer to flourish in liberating comfort. Others have found perfection in a flamboyant red denim, which highlights their equally flamboyant lifestyle. For me, it was a simple pair of dark khaki pants. In fact, I have developed the unique ability to track them down from a mile away, using their scent alone. I have become so familiar with the scent of my pants, as one does with the scent of a significant other, that I perk up as my mom pulls them out of the dryer and tosses them carelessly into the laundry basket next to her. The warmth of the soft cloth; the unmistakably worn, yet fresh scent; the essence of memories, swelling within the seams: they all interact to form a distinguished smell, recognizable only by me. Instinctively, an idea for tomorrow’s outfit begins to form. I will wear my pants. After I realize that my khakis are prepared for their next use, I become ecstatic. I rush into the laundry room, looking for my precious. Underneath piles of old Levis and stained t-shirts, I feel a rush of enthusiasm pour over my body like a warm shower on a cold winter’s evening. The feel of the outside of the pants is satisfying enough, yet it is nothing compared to the sensations that can be found within the cocoon of cloth.
