My hunger for understanding and changing the semiotics of our culture leads me to pursue communication design at Carnegie Mellon; my intent to create social designs aligns the School of Design’s passion for systems-thinking and impact. I reject superficial aesthetic and instead lead with strategy; I consider communication design to be a social force where content-based design incites dialogue and problem-solves. At Carnegie Mellon, I believe my outlook on design parallels the research and intuitive approach to socially effective design.

My mother's artistic career and father's love for biology and science create a dichotomy within my separated family. Engaged in design, I crave the liberty to be influenced by diverse threads of thought to inform my creativity. I intend to bring this lens to my study of design at Carnegie Mellon, where I know different strands of knowledge, insight, philosophy, and expertise will inevitably influence my practice. I cannot deny my dedication to the academics simply because I following a design path. Instead, I believe that precisely because design carrie a social intent, I need to be invested in various areas of knowledge to further inform my work and add a basis of profound research. To follow a single path for design would be dishonest and contradictory to the values that I stand for.
When I hung my canvas in Margaret Morrison's exhibition space during my Pre-College exhibition, I inevitably acknowledged the layered elements that influenced my piece created in Tim Hadfield’s class. Had it been a regular drawing class, I know I could not have brought such a concept to life on a canvas because I deviated from a narrow vision regarding my assignment.
