Desiree’s Baby is a short story written by Kate Chopin. The story is about a Desiree, who marries Armand Aubigny .Armand is so in love with Desiree that doesn't care that she was adopted without knowing her family history. They have a child, which they discover a couple months later that it is not all white. The Armand kick’s Desiree and her child out to never come back, which he later discovers that he is the one with the black background. In Desiree’s Baby , Kate Chopin uses the tone and mood to illustrate the story happiness to angry. There is many theme that the author use to illustrate how it was to live back then when this story took place. Racism in one of the biggest themes in this story. For example when “a belief is the primary determinant of human traits...racial differences ...of a particular race”( source 2). Armand judge his wife and child by the way they look and not known her background. Irony is the way the author is surprising, interesting, or amusing contradictions or contrasts the reader in the a story. One example of irony is dramatic in the story when Armand misjudges Desiree when he ”,is one of the “race that is cursed with the brand of slavery.” which he found out from a letter that his mother wrote to his father when he as young (source 1). Basically this part in the story comes in the end when Desiree and her child has left the house without looking back. Another example of irony that the author use is situational irony. In the story after Desiree has left he “sat in the wide hallway that commanded a view… a half dozen negroes the material which kept this fire a blaze.” (chopin 4).
