The short story, " Desiree's Baby," is a powerful piece that was written by Kate Chopin in the 1800s. Many writing elements can be found spread throughout this story, one of which being symbolism. Examples of this component include the stone pillar, the threatening mist, and Armond's bonfire. Upon reading one will notice the stone pillar mentioned more than once. It stands by the gate of the Valmonde's residence, and it is also an artifact symbolizing two major events in Desiree's life. As a child, she was found, "lying asleep in the shadow of the big stone pillar" (book quote). Her mysterious past unknown, the young girl is taken in by Madame Valmonde, and her life is sent into motion. The pillar is also involved when Desiree meets Armond
