Doss was a medic during World War II except he did not carry a gun with him at all while fighting. Doss received many awards and badges due to his bravery while enlisted in the army, and was also seen as one of the best and bravest soldiers, despite the rough times he encountered at the beginning of his enlistment. Here, the Americans would use cargo nets to climb a steep 400 ft cliff to get to the battlefield, this cliff was nicknamed Hacksaw Ridge. During the battle, Doss would help many men that were wounded, dressing their wounds in front of enemy fire then carrying each and every man back to safety, having them transferred to the hospital. This was Doss’ sole purpose: to help any and every man despite how close they were to death. Near the end of a day in battle, Doss’ battalion retreated back to safety. However, Doss stayed on the battlefield all night to help those left behind. When Doss found some of the soldiers, he created a special sling that would wrap around the soldiers enabling him to lower them down the 400 ft cliff. “‘So I just kept prayin', Lord, please help me get more and more, one more, until there was none left, and I'm the last one down’” (“HISTORY vs HOLLYWOOD”). The Lord answered giving him man after man after man. Doss repeatedly looked to the Lord to give him strength and the willpower to lower the men down to safety until there was none left. Doss single-handedly saved 75 men, including the ones who harassed him earlier in his career, bringing them back to safety with most of the men living after any surgery or treatment. Doss saved these men while under enemy fire still without the use of a weapon. During battle, Doss was injured in the leg due to a grenade, and his arm was shattered because of a sniper shot. Doss created a splint out of a gun for his arm and made it back to an aid station. In between Doss’ injury, multiple claimed Doss dead making it on front headlines of the newspaper.
