Right when a baby is born, they immediately begin to seek for someone to trust and provide for their basic needs. As an individual grows, they develop their own personality and characteristics, but this begs the question if a human’s personality and characteristics are determined more on nature or nurture. Which leads to the question: what characteristics make a human really a human? In Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein creates a monster from the dead using body parts from the dead. Instantly, Victor abandons the monster who later turns to murder.
Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, shows how a character who is portrayed as a tragic hero, in the beginning, can become the monster in the end. Victor and the Monster in Mary Shelley’s captivating novel showed how rival enemies share striking similarities. The similarities between the two tragic characters are driven by their dreary isolation from the secluded world. A large difference is that they were both raised in two completely different environments but understood the meaning of isolation. Physical differences are more noticeable rather than their personalities.
Victor first begins creating the monster, working tirelessly for selfish reasons. His body suffers tremendously and he drags himself along treating his body like a slave. He states: “My cheeks have grown pale with study, and my person had become emaciated with confinement.” (Shelly 33)
In the novel, the monster is portrayed as a grotesque and unnatural creature. He is not human, and he is not an animal. He is a creation that defies the laws of nature. Victor believes that the monster's existence is an affront to the natural order of things. He believes that the monster has no right to exist and that it is his duty to correct this unnatural state of affairs.
The novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley says a person is responsible for their actions if they do not weigh the possible consequences of their actions before making their final decision. Throughout the novel, Mary Shelley shows the consequences of actions that are done without proper thought beforehand. Victor Frankenstein wants to create life, he wants to be god, and his lust for this goal overtakes his common sense. Victor rushes into making his creature and then makes rash decisions which also contributes to his demise and the death of several of his close friends and family. The monster should be held responsible for his actions to a certain extent, however, his actions are influenced by Victor’s initial impetuous decisions.

It is my belief that society is the true ‘monster’ in the novel, and that it is through our experiences and interactions with society that shapes us into the person that we become. Because of the creatures experiences with abandonment, abuse, rejection, and lack of nurture, the creature turns from an innocent soul into a murderous monster. Society plays a huge role in the destruction of both the creature and Victor. When Victor first leaves for ignostalt he believes that “he will be unfit for the company of man.”

Firstly, Shelley‘s varied sentences make the extract more interesting. They make the basic form of the paragraphs flow with energy that spikes up at certain points to cause tension. An example of this is in the first paragraph, where she uses three different length sentences, the last one climaxing to when the creature comes alive. ‘The rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open’. By separating the word ‘when’ with commas, Shelley makes the setting tense because the pause warns the reader that something is about to happen.
Such passion is seen in Victor’s ‘noble intent’ to design a being that could contribute to society, but he had overextended himself, falling under the spell of playing ‘God,’ further digging his grave as he is blinded by glory. His creation – aptly called monstrous being due to its stature, appearance, and strength – proved to be more of a pure and intellectually disposed ‘child’ that moves throughout the novel as a mere oddity, given the short end of the stick in relation to a lack of familial figures within his life, especially that of parents. Clearly, Victor Frankenstein had sealed his fate: by playing God he was losing his humanity, ultimately becoming the manifestation of Mary Shelley’s hidden desires, deteriorating into The Lucifer Principle by which the author Howard Bloom notes social groups, not individuals, as the primary “unit of selection” in human psychological

In her novel, Shelley uses gothic nature settings to foreshadow dark events that are about to happen in the novel.
