Determination, defined by Merriam Webster dictionary, is the firm or fixed desire to achieve a certain end. This desire is essential as there is a direct correlation between determination and success because it provides the means necessary to overcome obstacles, keep focus and survive. Throughout Frank Darabont 's, The Shawshank Redemption, an underlining theme of determination is apparent in the actions of the protagonist, Andy Dufresne. Convicted, despite his adamant claim of innocence, Andy will serve two life sentences in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murder of his wife and her lover. Through the course of two decades, Andy demonstrates his determination to not succumb to the overwhelming pressures of institutionalization. By developing projects, Andy manifests resoluteness, and he adds purpose to his life and his fellow inmates. Though Andy refrains from becoming institutionalize while in Shawshank Penitentiary, his obstinacy and persistence that ensures his humanity. As a threat, institutionalization is a propelling force for Andy. Frank Darabont depicts the outcomes that ensue when a person undergoes institutionalization, he does this with the character Brooks Hatlen. Prior to being released Brooks had been in Shawshank State Penitentiary for fifty years.
