Abstract
This paper offers a new outlook on why developing character in Army professionals is important. The Army does an outstanding job in developing the technical and tactical abilities of its leaders. And yet, despite character being a component of impact for successful leadership, the Army believes that individuals will somehow develop their personal character to the outstanding level in which a leader needs with little or no clear guidance. Specifically, this paper analyzes why the Army believes that it is important to develop character in their professionals. It also describes how they develop character through Army values, warrior ethos, and discipline.

In today’s military, we serve to protect and serve the American people and the country we live in. To do this, we as leaders require desirable leadership; values based character, and outstanding competence. As a soldier, you embed yourself with following the warrior ethos. It has stated in the Soldiers Creed that I will always place the mission first, I will never accept defeat, I will never quit, and I will never leave a fallen comrade. This is a powerful statement that one’s mind has to overcome all situations you will be put in. This can range from pushing your body to the ultimate physical limit on a physical fitness test or being in a combat zone while out on patrol, one of your subordinates is wounded, and you need to bring them back to safety. Regardless of the situation, a person is in where if it is at home or on duty, your character needs to shine through the warrior
