1. Has something bad ever happened to you in life and someone else told your story? Did they miss any important details or change a few facts to make it seem more interesting? Growing up in a small, rural community the majority of the population was uninsured and underserved. Access to primary healthcare was limited with most physicians’ offices being close to an hour drive one way. I grew up seeing both of my parents work two jobs and still having to make the decision to put their health on the back burner due to lack of finances or insufficient insurance coverage. This often led to numerous emergency department visits because of the lack of access to a primary care physician who could have provided preventative care. This was not only an issue within my home but throughout the town.
1.If you have (or have had) grandparents, or older adults in your life who fulfilled the role of grandparent, identify the various roles that these individuals have played or are currently playing in your life. My grandparents have tremendously impacted my life with constant warmth, love, affection, and motivation. They have served as caregivers when my parents were at work, so I began to build some sort of attachment toward my grandparents. When I was younger, for example, I would ride the school bus to my grandparents’ house after my classes while my parents were at work.

A goal of mine, as well as others, has always been to be utmost person that I could possibly be. I realized though, I was doing the complete opposite of that. I was born with the rare disease called Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT), a disease that affects the nerves of my hands and legs. I used my disability as an excuse to hold myself from opportunities granted to me because of the shame I felt. As I started high school I realized that it was up to me to reach my full potential.
One of the key lessons I learned from the Family Life Skill Classes was how not to judge people in our perspective. Dr. Norman taught us that reason why we do this is because we need to feel we are in control, and is an arrogant thing to do. I notice almost of all the fights I have with wife is because we think we know what each of us is thinking. My wife just to get mad at me because of the way I spend our money, and I would get mad at her for getting on me about it, because I just too think she was just trying to control me. My wife learned a way to submit to me was by asking me before she bought anything, but I never felt like I had to answer to her when I wanted to spend money.
