AJ Jesalpura Mrs. DeTora English Honors 10 RAHP 25 March, 2023 Analyzing the development of characters from The Lord of the Flies Written in 1954 Golding released his The Lord of the Flies out to the world around nine years after the second world war. The storyline starts off with a plane crash stranding prepubescent school boys on a deserted island free from any sign of human life. The boys are stripped from the laws of society rapidly as they realize any adult has perished in the plane crash. Days slowly turn into weeks and time turns meaningless as they try to create order in their situation and attempt to live a life of civilization. This stage is the most essential to human survival and it consists of basic necessities. Golding removes this stage from the pyramid by giving the boys their basic needs. Only after the psychological needs are satisfied can humans think of other needs, which is exactly what Golding focuses the book on. As predicted the boys begin the process to fulfill their second need, security. This stage is where many of the younger boys struggle to fulfill as they are afraid of the beast, a creature that they believe is a physical threat to their existence. This conflicts with their ability to develop further as the boys struggle to understand that the creature is non-physical and can not be defeated. Following Golding’s book, present society could turn into a disaster extremely quickly if there were not meticulous laws placed to control people. As for the boys they evolved very much according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs each of the boys achieved higher than basic needs which is what humans look for after their first need is met. These stages accurately represent the development of humans today as they also go through this pyramid but with a civilization and laws to assist with creating an ideal
