During this initial phase of development, children experience the world and gain knowledge through their senses and motor movement (Rathus, 2016). As the child is engaged in the sensory motor exploration of this toy, their motor skills develop as well as their problem solving skills. This toy improves the child’s sensory motor skills in several ways. Reaching and pounding the nails with his/her hands provides actions that are reinforced by the nails that light up when pounded on. The child can also hold the hammer and pound the nails enhancing the development of his/her eye and hand coordination. The child can pull the knob for the drill press, spin the paint roller, and press various buttons which results in lights, realistic sounds and music playing. With this the child is reacting to the cause and effect
