Learning that my younger brother George was diagnosed with autism and ADHD left me afraid and confused as I knew nothing about either subject. Researching autism on the internet led me into what I later discovered was called developmental psychology. I was particularly interested in how a child’s development is influenced by their experiences and environment and in turn how these shape their identity and impact their entire life. Finding out more about Georges difficulties gave me my introduction into psychology. My enthusiasm for psychology increased when at thirteen I carried out voluntary work in my old primary school during my extended holidays.
