The Mission of DHS The mission of the Department of Homeland Security has had to evolve. On February 15, 2005, Secretary Michael Chertoff and initiated a Second Stage Review of the Department. Secretary Chertoff broadcasted a six-point agenda in July 2005. The six-point plan was to increase overall preparedness, create better transportation security systems, strengthen border security, information sharing, improve DHS financial management, and realign the DHS organization (DHS, 2015). Next, The Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007 was enacted (DHS, 2015). The Act reorganized intelligence operations at the department to reform the legislative branch’s oversight of intelligence and counterterrorism activities (Public Law 110-53, 2007). Henceforth, the mission statement of the Department of Homeland Security is to “ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards” (DHS, 2016). The three key concepts of DHS are security, resilience, and customs and exchange, therefore are the foundation of homeland security strategy, which drives the core missions: Prevent terrorism and enhancing security; Secure and manage our borders; Enforce and administer our immigration laws; Safeguard and secure cyberspace; …show more content…
